Where a bird's nest is and the eggs are three
And the bird is brown, and the eggs are blue
And the twigs are old but the moss is new~~
that many of the birds in your yard re-use their summer nests in winter, as spending the night in a semi-enclosed space keeps them up to 15 degrees warmer, enabling them to survive much easier. Spending 50% less energy heating their body at night allows them to survive easier when food is scarce. Birds sometimes even store food in their nests. Another fact is that birds often shelter together to keep warm - as many as 60 wrens have been found roosting in one nest box to shelter from the cold. (just some winter nest trivia for you)
My plan was to begin my Winter Nesting on January 1 - however with 45 nests to make, I took advantage and actually started the "nesting" in early December - (surprise!) Almost one third of the very patient folks on my list have already received their nests!!
~~~
~~~
~~~
Thank you to everyone who has so patiently waited between 6 and 9 months for this "nesting " season to begin! Bless your hearts! Remember~~ good things come to those who wait - (patiently!)
~~~
~~~
This "nesting" season will find little nests going to 18 states in the US. Nests have now traveled to all of the 50 states (including Alaska and Hawaii) except for New Mexico, Vermont, and Alabama - (where are you guys?)
This season the little nests will also be flying to homes in Canada, Denmark, Portugal, Italy, and Turkey.
If you are on the current "nesting" list - you can expect to hear from me by mid-March. If you think you are on the list - and don't hear from me- PLEASE email me!
Needless to say - things are pretty busy in the Sacred Yarn Room right now! I am expecting this session to take me until sometime in March. This new year promises to reveal some very special Limited Editions - all of them connected to a charitable cause.
You can look for that Limited Edition "Harvest Nest" to debut sometime around August or September. The proceeds from this charity nest will be donated to a local food bank. (there will be 20 of these little nests)
In the late Spring - a very special surprise nest will debut. I am keeping the details of this Limited Edition nest a secret for now - but I can tell you that the charitable proceeds will go to a place that is very near and dear to my heart. Here is your one and only hint~~ (think soft and pretty pinks and blues~~~)
the next "nesting" session for these little green nests will NOT be until late in the fall. (probably November - gasp!!) So - if you are a patient person and are willing to wait - you can email for information and to be placed on that waiting list. I am going to make 25 nests for that session ~~~
~~ there are other nesting surprises planned for this next year also - but I can't tell - because - they are a SURPRISE!!
Would you go to this much trouble for a photo shoot? Am I crazy? (don't answer that!!)The day of this photo shoot was COLD !! I had to take several "go back into the house to warm up breaks!"
The Gardener was a wonderful assistant - he helped to take the pictures, and helped me to get everything back to the house. He even made me a cup of hot chocolate!
This is what the woods behind our house looked like BEFORE the photo session. It is a hefty walk from our house to this wooded area! I piled all of my "stuff" into the garden cart and pulled it along in the snow - (garden carts really don't roll too good in the snow - just letting you know!)
My dear friend Jan (DreamChallenge blog) has just given me the most precious gift to commemorate this nesting season. This beautiful nest pendant with gemstone eggs is truly a special gift and I love it so very much! Thank you my friend!! This is definitely me - don't you think? (Jan is just beginning her blogging experiences - won't you visit her and say Hello? She is a passionate knitter who loves to make baby clothing. If you are in need of a knitted heirloom - please let her know - she will be thrilled to create a lovely knitted treasure for you.)
My first attempt at "tagging!" These little tags were created especially for this "Winter Nesting" season. Starting today - all the nests will be packaged bearing this little special "winter" tag.
Vicki
Your work is so beautiful! What a great way to uplift my winter blues! Your woods is beautiful too. We have one also and I took a quick walk in the cold brisk air today and it even had a bit of sunshine to take the sting of the cold off! I will check out the international blog event. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteWhen I see those nests I always feel warm and cosy, even when they are sitting on the snow. You have changed your header - it looks lovely.
ReplyDeleteI've looked at your nests hundreds of times, and I continue to feel such amazement (but not surprise) at your talent! What vision, Vicki! The photo shoot is glorious; thank you for taking the time (and freezing) to bring us those images!
ReplyDeleteThese are all just breathtakingly beautiful Vicki!
ReplyDeleteOh I can't wait to see the Harvest Nests and I know I want one without even seeing them. I'd love to win one of your upcycled cowls. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteHi sweet Vicki ~~ your header is always lovely. Beautiful pics! You are one busy girl! It seems like you knit nests constantly--and I can hardly knit one little scarf and get it finished! Shame on me! But guess what? I finished the hiking scarf yesterday afternoon! Woo Hoo!! I am encouraged and now will start on something else.
ReplyDeleteYour nest necklace is beautiful! You certainly deserve it. I'm excited for you and all your surprises you have going! How fun! I'd love to be entered for one of your vintage scarves. Have a wonderful knitting day! I'm off to a friend's brunch...
Beautiful beautiful nests. What a talent you have.
ReplyDeleteWell, your winter tags are nothing to be ashamed of, that's for sure! Now don't go putting me out of business!!!!! I'd love to share a cup of hot chocolate in your woods - it's absolutely stunning out there. Cold, yes. Beautiful, you bettcha! Sign me up for one of your knitted cowls. I may live in the big "D" but it gets chilly here, too!
ReplyDeletePS ... I know what the pretty pinks and blues are but my lips are sealed.
The nests are beautiful! And I can see you're going to be a busy little birdie yourself this year!! :-) Love the snowflakes on your 'warm and cozy' too!
ReplyDeleteVicki, so many beautiful nests and so little time, I saw the whole year fly by reading your post!!! My goodness you are going to be so busy, but they are just gorgeous no wonder everyone wants one! I do cherish mine and I am so excited to making some little birdies for it!
ReplyDeleteGreat photo shoot, The Gardener is a wonderful assistant, hang on to him!!!
Hugs,
Oh happy day...off to "roll." :)
ReplyDeleteAh! So,So, Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteDo you really knit them or is it kniting/weaving/sewing all in one?
They must take you hours to do. Roughly hour many hours for the most popular sized one?
Keep them coming!
Take care,
Sandie xx
The nests are wonderful, such a mix of texture and color. I love looking at them! I can see you have been one busy lady! Loved seeing the behind the scene of your photo shoot. The small nest your friend created is a real treasure and keepsake. What a nice reminder of your nests that have touched the lives of many. The nest may reside in a home and touch the lives of those that live there and admire their beauty. The nests also touch lives when a charity is the receipient, great job Vicki, way to share your heart!
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of hearts I am glad you are also participating in "One World One Heart!
Deb
Your nests never disappoint. Even though I have my own, I still want more...;-) How beautiful is that nest necklace!!! Did she make it herself? I have crocheted with wire and the look is neat! I wonder if I could make one myself. Hmmmmmm, thinking cap time. =) Thank you for sharing. You are so talented and so blessed to have such a wonderful husband. May God keep pouring His blessings on you!
ReplyDeleteVicki, the posting of that precious gift, the nest necklace was very kind. The best part was the fact that you showed it on the note given with the gift. KeriBeth will someday treasure that as much as the sterling silver necklace with eggs. Bless you,Jan
ReplyDeleteYour nests are oh so gorgeous, Vicki. In real they must be even more beautiful, I wonder if that is possible!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for joining in my giveaway, I threw your name in the big hat, fingers crossed!
Have a happy Monday xxxx
Vicki your Winter Nests look so stunning with that snowy backdrop! Love the little poem at the beginning and that beautiful yarn that emulates the moss within your nests...so perfect! Oh and I think you need a snowmobile to transport your sweet nests to their photoshoot! Although the hot chocolate would help make up for having to use the garden cart through all that snow. Very beautiful post Vicki! xo ~Lili
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous post!! I think I know the place of little Pinks and Blues, I'll keep it a secret until you ask me to share~
ReplyDeleteYes, I would love to win one of your Gorgeous cowls!! Have a wonderful week Vicki!!
Huggs, Nancy
Baby, it's cold outside and I need me a cowl. Oh yes, I sure do!
ReplyDeleteVicki, enjoy making your nests!! You are one busy lady!!
ReplyDeleteHello :) I just found your blog through following from one blog to another and I am so glad I wound up here! Your nest are something special and now I'm off to read some more...Sheila
ReplyDeleteOh I do love your nests, oh the colours and textures. I must say I often wondered how birds stayed warm and sheltered in the winter. I even saw some going into a bird house I have against a tree. How lovely to think of them snuggled into their nests they so carefully made for their eggs. Roll on Spring so I can hear more bird song! How kind of you to again do a giveaway. Hugs, Catherine xx
ReplyDeleteMore gorgeous nests!! They are stunning in the snow. I would have gone out there too! Please stop over A Bird in Hand to see how much I love my new nest! Really, Vicki....a true work of art that I cherish!!
ReplyDeleteLove to you!! Stay warm!!
Hi Vicky,
ReplyDeleteYour nests are so intriguing and fascinating! I love the way you called your Sacred Yarn Room. I have a similar room: at times I think: what do I do with all of this, but it is so inspiring!
Enjoy making all your nests and I will see them passing by on my reading list!
Happy day!
Jacoba
I keep wondering... what do you think about while creating your nests? Where does your mind wander while your fingers work their magic?
ReplyDeleteJust one comment from me, one entry on behalf of my sweet mama. She's given her life for others, & I wish I could give her the moon in return. She's always cold now, & loves pretty things to keep her warm, about all year round.
If Miss Maddy pulls my name out of the hat, I'll give mama the surprise of choosing one... your cowl will be cherished by the most beautiful woman in the world.
Another beautiful photo shoot, Vicki. The sparkling snow is a perfect backdrop for the nests AND the model :-)
Hugs,
Julia~
This isz so pretty. I am glad to have found your blog and I hope to be back soon. I am a nurse.
ReplyDeleteKnow what a cowl is? A big Vicki hug! I need me a Vicki hug, too!
ReplyDeleteYour nests are beautiful. I never thought of doing that. We have so many birds here in The Netherlands and feed them daily. Merels, Pemplemaise, Koolmaise, Redbreasts, Songleisters, Doves...all hungry and cold. I see them perching in the trees and wondering how they stay warm. You have a beautiful blog, one I will enjoy daily.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous blog you have - I found you just before Christmas and love checking back on you - and oh my gosh - your music - I love to open your blog tohear the music you play - LOVE LOVE LOVE!! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful work you do - the nesting intrigues me - excited to keep watch :-)
Sweet Up-North Mornings...
I love all your nests! Each one is so unique and the combination of yarn colors is just stunning.
ReplyDeleteBoy it sure looks cold out there in the snow.
I hope you had a cozy cuppa hot chocolate once you were back inside!
And the necklace, wow is that you or what?
My dear Vicki,
ReplyDeleteyou are right... it seems that we are really blessed... with wonderful families, health, dear and precious friends and a positive spirit.
And I deeply hope that the Lord will let us stay another lot of wonderful years *giggle*... that we can share our creative moments also in 10 years. Hugs & love Myriam
Hi Vicki,
ReplyDeleteone again *lol*.... if you would like to participate in "Neugierig gefragt" I will translate the questions in english if you want... just let me know. Hugs Myriam
The sun is shining like it's August here in the big "D" but let me tell you ... baby, it's cold outside and I need me a cowl!
ReplyDeleteVicki, You are crazy to go out in the cold-what are you thinking friend. ALthough I must say those nests are gorgeous. You really displayed them nicely. No back in side, light the fireplace and enjoy some hot whiskey and a massage. You have some awesome talent.
ReplyDeleteThe temps here are supposed to rise today ... but not high enough for me. I need a cowl!
ReplyDeleteVicki, these images are GLORIOUS!!!!
ReplyDeleteAre my nests among any of these lovely images??? Don't forget about me!!!! I am anxious to see these in person!! :))
Spring is in the air over here. My feathered friends are already wooing potential mates and there has been plenty of plumage fluffing and combat dancing in the quarry of quail. I have even been privy to witness a hawk deliver mouse a la cart to his new romance. However, I fear Mother Nature is not truly ready for the mating game to begin just yet!
Carissima....what an exceptional Artist you are...GORGEOUS CREATIONS.....WONDERFUL PRESENTATION.....FANTASTIC PHOTOGRAPHY......SUBLIME FANTASY...!!!!!! SOOOO PRETTY YOU in the snow.....!!!!
ReplyDeleteCertainly....it must have been soo very cold...but you did such a wonderful work..: The white brilliant snow enhances the "colourspectacle" of your fantastic Birds Nest magicly.....it is truly a wonderful Exposition!!!
All my biggest compliments for your fabulous new fascinating Cawl-Collection... What a brilliant, elegant Idea...and sublime work....FANTASTICO!!!
Un abbraccione ciao ciao elvira
My dear Vicki,
ReplyDeleteI needed to catch up with you and your nests and wonderful life. Sorry I've been lax, but the time flies by and then you realize how behind you are.
The nests, textures, colors, eggs, take my breath. I love your creations.
Thank you for your visits and for your words about our Before and After post on creating the 1930 kitchen of my dreams. You're right. I am always so happy to sit in there, especially when my grands are giggling around the old farm table, or rolling out dough, or cutting cookies. The kitchen has a heartbeat.
Sending love to you and your beloveds,
Sharon Lovejoy Writes from Sunflower House and a Little Green Island
Vicki, I admire the hard work and creativity you put into this shoot - it's amazing. Your "Winter Nests" would look gorgeous in any setting but the outdoor shoot was a brilliant idea. I salute you, my friend!
ReplyDeleteYour nests are delicate, breathtaking works of art. I understand why you can only make so many...I came over to tell you that I made the Chocolate Pancakes again tonight and I needed to add more sweetened cocoa than I estimated on the recipe. So when you decide to make them be sure to add 1/4 c. cocoa or add 1/8 c. and then add more to your liking. I think these are my favorite breakfast sweets now. I will be ordering one of your nest someday....when my dear hubby and I are back on our feet. This economic recession has been hard on us. Right now we are just trying to stay in our beloved Sea Cottage and not lose her to foreclosure. Thank you for your friendship! ox kerrie
ReplyDeleteHi sweet Vicki!!! My goodness girl, you've been so BUSY! I think I should be a very thankful girl that I have a gorgeous nest from your hands already....hanging in a sweet old bird cage in our dining room!!! I hope you are doing wonderful sweet friend, hugs and love, Dawn
ReplyDeleteAnything knitted by Miss Vicki is worth another comment. Oh yeah!
ReplyDeleteWow! Those nests are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI adore knitting and many other crafts. There's not enough time in the day to everything I want to do, but that's the way it goes isn't it?
Your photos are simply stunning too!
Hi Vicki,
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness your new Harvest nests are beautiful...I love mine so much and look at everyday! and I always seem to find something new hidden inside of the nest.
I will drop by and say hello to Jan.
Please drop my name into the hat..
Have a sweet day and keep warm!
big hugs, Elizabeth
Yubba Dubba Do. I need a cowl to wrap around my neck because it is chilly here this morning.
ReplyDeletehttp://poetesswug-thewugsbackyardblogspot.blogspot.com/2011/01/this-one-is-for-you.html
Our sun is brightly shining, but there's still a nip in the air and a chill on my neck. Send on the cowl!
ReplyDeleteAs I sit here in the chill of the morning wearing wool socks, fleece robe and wrapped in a blanket, it's just not the same as having one of your cowls lovingly wrapped around my neck and shoulders.
ReplyDeleteVicki, I don't know if I have mentioned this a million times yet or not, but I love your nests! They are so creative. It looks like a cold day for a photo shoot. You have a pretty nice gardener, making you cocoa. I saw your heart and would be so happy to receive it in the swap! You are such a talented lady! Thanks for visiting. Take care, Connie
ReplyDeleteHello my sweet friend!
ReplyDeleteLove all your pictures you really do have a talent in making a display for your pictures, beautiful! Happy nesting!
Hugs Tami
Should I win, I would LOVE to keep the cowl for myself...but I probably won't. You see, I woke this morning with news that my dear cousin in Connecticut lost is three-year battle with ALS. I think perhaps his wife, Karin, may need it more. I'm sure it would feel good to her to have some love around her neck.
ReplyDeleteHurry Hurry Hurry. Send me that cowl. It's gonna get nippy here in a couple of days. "Record lows" so they say.
ReplyDeletethese nests are so very much worth the wait... your work is beautiful... and i too am crazy when it comes to my photo shoots - but it makes a difference... and i am so glad that you get help from the gardener!
ReplyDeleteI long for one of your beautiful nest. Your work is breathtaking. What a wonderful way to spend your time, making something beautiful for someone else. I would love to win one of your cowls. I've already been looking and it will be hard to pick just one. Hope you have a great week.
ReplyDeleteIs my cowl in the mail yet? I think I'm gonna be needing it because the big "D" is expecting the coldest cold snap since forever. Gonna be here tomorrow, from what I've heard. And nothing would warm me up more than a little Vicki love around my neck.
ReplyDeleteI am entering a second time, and maybe later a third. lol How is your snow accumulation? has it slowed down any? Still nice and warm here in Tampa!!
OMG ... I just can't believe this. Dallas and Fort Worth have CLOSED. Yes, totally shut down because of baaaaaadddddddd weather. Well, of course, football has not shut down - they're in high gear doing what they do before a Super Bowl game. It's so cold here - unbelieveable. I need that cowl, for sure!
ReplyDeleteVicki, I can certainly see why you've got waiting lists for your nests because they are just so, so GORGEOUS! Love your snowy photos too! Stay warm and toasty...I'm sure lots of your Gardener's yummy hot chocolate will help with that! xo Paulette ;)
ReplyDeleteJust thinking of you today Vicki xx I saw some abandoned nests snuggled in the trees at work, all mossed over and twinkly magical with the frost and I thought of you. This is a beautiful photo shoot.
ReplyDeleteHugs Lynn xxxx
You are so clever xx
I could really use one of your cowls right now! We are at 18 degrees in Texas tonight! Unheard of around here, definitely a record! Your cowls are so beautiful, lovely work! Love the nests! Great post!
ReplyDeleteBaby it's cold outside. Us Texans just ain't used to this kind of weather. Our city has shut down (literally!) and everybody is complaining. Need me a cowl - I'd try to wrap all my neighbors with it!
ReplyDeleteI came by for OWOH but saw this post and I am so glad i looked! Your photography is amazing! I love your blog and just couldn't help myself to comment here and well, I just felt the need to become a friend - look forward to future visits but for now back to OWOH tour.
ReplyDeleteHugs from snowy New Hampshire
We are on day three of this winter mess and everybody is tired of it. Companies have closed. People are hunkered down. Traffic is extremely light. Oh, and did I mention COLD? We're to get a high of 14 today. Texas doesn't do this very well, trust me! Brrrrr. I need a cowl!
ReplyDeletethese nests are something I have never seen before and so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHello Vicki!
ReplyDeleteI hate being cold! I grew up in Houston; which isn't know for being all that cold; moved to Minnesota at age 21; which IS known for being cold, except by me at 21!! Now, I live in the Phoenix area; very well known for warmth. Except for NOW! It's below freezing. I moved here to thaw out. Sleeping in socks for heaven's sake. I hate that except for camping. Any extra layers are heartily welcome. And, if they happen to be beautiful & luxurious, well then! Tina
I'm ready to go back to bed and pull the covers over my head. It's a winter wonderland out there today. We got a couple of inches of snow last night and it's still coming down. Totally predicted but still not welcomed. Yikkes! I hope that cowl is big enough to wrap around my whole body, not just my neck!
ReplyDeleteWe have sunshine today ... wahoo! But there's still a nip in the air - BIG TIME. Need me a cowl, Vicki!
ReplyDeleteWell, of course I'd like to win one of your sweater cowls!! It's freezing here! (I'm in Canada)
ReplyDeleteWell golly gee whiz ... we're supposed to get more "weather" today. Know what that means? That means my neck will be chilly again ... need me a cowl, Vicki!
ReplyDeleteThe sun is shining but the furnace is still cranked up. Need me a cowl!
ReplyDeleteEverything looks so beautiful. And "no, you are not crazy" to go to all that trouble for a wonderful photo shoot ;-) I'm so glad to enter your giveaway since the prize looks gorgeous in winter white.
ReplyDeleteI would love to be entered in your wonderful drawing. Please stop by my blog #809 for a chance to win my door prize.
ReplyDeleteSandra
Oh my. Our weather forecaster, David Finfrock (yeah quite the name) told us we're gonna get hit again with freezing temps, snow and ice. Yikkers! Need some cowl love, I do I do.
ReplyDeleteWow, I would love to win one of your lovely sweater cowls. What a generous giveaway. They are all so beautiful and I love the snowflake one. Please throw me in the hat for a chance to win.
ReplyDeleteYour nest necklace is so special and very beautiful.
I love your nests and all your photos. You are one busy lady, for sure! I am thinking about emailing and ordering a nest. How will you ever keep up if people keep ordering?
Stay warm.
♥ audrey
Well, it just doesn't rain but what it pours, does it now? On top of freezing - no, below freezing temps, icy roads, my computer DIED ... and it isn't even two years old. In the shop now so hope it doesn't cost us an arm, a leg or the first born. Good thing I have your blog memorized and have this ancient computer to leave you a message! Oh, I sure hope we're not faced with a gazillion dollar bill and that it can be fixed inexpensively! I really could use one of those cowl hugs about now ... I really could!
ReplyDeleteProbably not a good thing ... we've not heard back from the fix-my-computer-now person. Uck! I am not happy over this at all. Sure could use a nice yarn hug!
ReplyDeleteOh Vicki Vicki Vicki. Every day when I look at this post and see what you have created, I just drool. You are so very very talented, it just blows my mind. Lucky you! You guessed it - still no computer. Hope they don't decide to charge us by the hour to fix it! Our temperatures are climbing and the sun is shining, but I still need a cowl hug around my neck. Happy Day, friend!
ReplyDeletei wish i had the time to sit here and enter "as many times as I wanted".......i see that some of your entrants have done just that! LOL
ReplyDeletebut, i can't and i really didn't even come to enter a contest (though) i'd love to win:)
I came by to see what you were up to - haven't talked to you in a while.
I read about the spring "pink and blue" nest - if you've got any extra spaces, i would love to order one:)
been missin' you, jan
Oh my. Oh my. Oh my. Our mercury is supposed to travel all the way up to the 61 mark today. Can you believe it? May be too warm for that cowl around my neck but I'm sure it would look beautiful draped across the chair. Yeah?
ReplyDeleteWell, last day for my chance to win one of your beautiful cowls, Miss Vicki. Yessiree ... tomorrow is the big day. I'm sure you and Little Love Maddie will be having the sweetest party with lots of delicious treats just before she pulls a name out of the basket. Wish I could be there to take a bite out of one of those delicious treats you're bound to serve up. As always, leaving daily notes to you was fun - win or not! Thank you for you, your blog, your insipiration and your kind words - always!
