This little cabled baby blanket has been a challenge for me. I started it last year (it pains me so to admit this----) and it is still not finished. But - it is ALMOST finished! Obviously, it did not get completed for the birth of our first grandchild, our precious Mason.
As you know, we are expecting our second little grandbaby in April. Soooo---- if you were me, and you wanted to give this little blue blanket to this really special little baby girl - what would you do to make it look - well - more girly?
Does anyone besides me think that little girls can also wear blue? Believe me - this little girl is going to have lots of PINK little things to wear! Remember the pink posting a few days ago? I am frantically knitting a pink baby trousseau----
I have invested so much time and love on this baby blanket. This little project has literally, travelled all over the world with me. On the beaches in St. Martin, on the beaches in Florida, on a cruise ship that sailed around South America, on a cruise to Bermuda, and traveling hundreds of miles as we drove back and forth to Atlanta to see Mason and to Florida to our condo - this little blanket has logged some serious miles! I can't bear the thought that I might lose an opportunity to give this to a special grandchild.

So, I am open to your suggestions and ideas. I really do want to know your thoughts. If you think that this blanket is not meant for a baby girl - you can say that too. Just give it to me straight----

That is a beautiful blanket and I am sure that your granddaughter will love it. Blue is a lot of girl's favourite colour!!! Of course you can give it to her!
I love it, now I don't feel so bad, I am struggling with a cable blanket that I am making, I can forge ahead, I have only been at it for a few months!!! Just kidding!
Your blanket is gorgeous!!!!!
Hugs,
Margaret B
I see no reason why a little girl cannot use a blue blankie. That blanket is gorgeous. I know that my daughter's would have used it for a girl or boy baby--and I would have done the same.
Hi!At us in Russia it is accepted to give things of blue color to boys, but girls too in fact this color approaches. Important in things for children not color scale, and that they are done that with loving care for it!
Blessings to you and your family. Regards Julia
I think you could do a lacy crochet edging around the blanket and make it girly. I have a daughter with the most gorgeous blue eyes, so although she wears a lot of pink, I make it a point to put her in blues as well. I started a baby sweater when we were trying to get pregnant, it turned out to be quite "boy-ish" - blue and green with a fuzzy sheep. I worried about putting her in it, but it was so adorable on her. Boys cannot wear pink but little girls can definitely be precious in blue!
I say leave it as it is -it's already beautiful enough for a little girl
Mercy, this blue creation is magnificant. Yes, I agree that little girls can wear blue. Our little Cathy had her first year picture taken in a beautiful blue dress to match her very large blue eyes. Such a little doll baby. OK, so what can you do to make it girlie. I think a few pink flowers made out of that yarn with the pearls and then some very light green leaves connecting the flowers. Not many, just a few where they will be seen near the place where the blanket will be folded in the front. You are amazing. Jan

Oh it is beautifull, and such a wonderfull little blanket.
I think the blue/pink question is not as it was whem my child was born 32 years ago. Now I would love to give a child this fantastic work -girl,-or boy.You are knitting so beautifully, I`m sure it will be loved ,for a little baby girl too.

I would make/take that blanket in a heartbeat for either of my girls, as is, it needs nothing to make it girlie. I think doing anything to it would detract from your stunning cable-work. Our oldest daughter who is now 5, hated pink (yes, as an infant if she saw pink she would start screaming) until last year. But with her big blue eyes, well that blanket would have been perfect. Guess what I'm saying the long way is...Girls Can Have Blue!!! I never got why it was for boys. Read somewhere that many, many years ago pink was a good strong color for boys and that girls didn't get pink items. I say finish it and give it to that sweet baby girl when she arrives...a break from the pink will be appreciated.
:)
I think any little girl would be lucky to have such a beautiful blanket!
Hi Vivian,
thank you so much for stopping by for a latte.... i think this blanket is wonderful for a girl - my little girl would have loved it... she still wears blue a lot! And you said you will also take care that she will get a lot of pink things.... and if you still think its a bit to boyish I would take some old lace like I did in my baby layout and put it somewhere on the blanket... im sure you will have a fab idea - have a great weekend Hugs Myriam
PS. Longing for April lol
There is nothing prettier that blue & white. I would knit some beautiful white flowers & put them in one corner. That would make it more femine. And then if you choose to take it a step further do a pretty white crochet lacey chain stitch around that pretty border. You know... chain 4-7 stitches go in attach & then repeat all around the outside. That will give a lacey look & complete the blue & white femine look. HUGS! Charlene
I'd embroider some pink or yellow daisies on it every so often. I think it's gorgeous as it is...lots of little girls get so tired of so much pink.
Again...beautiful work.

Your knitting is beautiful. Give this gift and I'm sure it will be a big hit.
I think it is just beautiful and any baby would love to be wrapped in it - boy or girl.
It's beautiful, and anyone, girl or boy, would be lucky to have it!!! If you really want it to have some pink, why not weave a pink ribbon around the edge and in one corner, tie it in a bow. There's the "little girl" element without taking away from the beauty of the blanket!!!
I'd embroider some daisy flowers on it and call it a day. Gorgeous baby blanket!
Oh please give it to her! My baby girl had a dark blue blanket with white stars - and yes, we knew she was a girl. We adopted her when she was 6months old and I knitted it because it reminded me of the Virgin Mary's starry mantle and so it felt like a reminder of that protection before she came to us. At toddler group all our children sing and dance beneath a big play silk "sky" and they all love that soft pale blue, and I am sure your sweet grand daughter will too.
add a couple of rows of knitted lace around teh edge if you really need as though you have to cahnge it. It certiantly will make it softer as that seems to be where you are headed I ove the suggestions of daisys embroidered on some of the cables as well either way it is lovely and will be enjoyed especially if you add the stroy of its travels for later reading
OMG, it's beautiful and I am so jealous since I am still a beginner...but, maybe those wonderful Knitting needles will help and my fingers are still crossed....can't wait until 2/12...and, to top it off, 2/13 is my birthday and I can't think of a better gift for the big 5 0.
Take care,
Donna
Hi Vicki,
thank you for passing by - Im happy that you enjoyed looking around there for a while.... i always enjoy very much visiting you with my latte on my blog-tour! And Im sure til April I will have been here some times... lol. Hugs and a wonderful week Myriam
Hi ~ I found your blog recently and saved this post to come back and leave an answer. Now I've read through all the comments and think that a lot of folks came up with some good ideas! I especially liked Charlene's answer about blue and white--using white flowers and/or a white lacy edging around the blue blanket. I do think adding a color like that would really set it off. I wish you the best in finishing it! :)
What about some little colorful flowers?
I mean a sort of embroidery (I hope this is the good word, I'm not so good with english)
That blanket, as you have described it, is not a blanket -- though it is a beautiful piece of knitting! -- it is an heirloom. When was the last time you minded the color of an heirloom?
It's gorgeous just how it is. If you really wanted to, you could stitch a bit of pink, perhaps in one corner? If I were your granddaughter-on-the-way 40 years later, I would really love it if I had a blanket my grandmother knitted -- and I would love it if it had her initials on it and the dates it was begun and completed. Maybe a little small daisy, or two. That said, I think it will be treasured just as it is. Great work.
Hi Vicki,
I think the blue blanket is perfect as it is, or you could weave a pink satin ribbon around the edge of it with a pretty bow in a corner...
^..^

Blue is my little girl's favorite as well. The blanket was made with love from you. It is gorgeous - I admire the amounts of time it must have taken to complete it! Wow~~~
Your blanket is stunning!
Catching up on my blog-reading backlog and just had to say - I think it's fine as-is! Especially if there's a chance the new baby will have blue eyes, because the nice soft blue color will only enhance them. That blanket is beautiful, and what a fantastic story you'll have to tell the little one a few years from now, as she curls up in your lap with it. ;)
